Why Does Purdue Partner with United Way?
Purdue University’s partnership with United Way of Greater Lafayette began in the early 1980s under the leadership of President Steven Beering and Senior Vice President of Development Charles Wise. Their vision established what has grown into one of the largest university-based United Way campaigns in the country, reflecting Purdue’s longstanding commitment to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve.
Today, Purdue employees continue that legacy by supporting local nonprofit organizations that provide essential services, including food and housing assistance, mental health care, youth programs, financial stability resources, senior services, and more. Many of these organizations also serve Purdue students, faculty, staff, retirees, and their families.
The Purdue United Way partnership extends beyond charitable giving. Throughout the year, United Way of Greater Lafayette and its partner agencies collaborate with Purdue faculty, staff, and students on volunteer initiatives, research, internships, and community-engaged projects that create meaningful impact on campus and across our communities.
As Purdue continues to expand across Indiana, so does the reach of our partnership. Employees based in West Lafayette support United Way of Greater Lafayette, while employees based in Indianapolis support United Way of Central Indiana. Donors also have the option to designate their gift to another United Way or eligible nonprofit organization, ensuring their contribution supports the people and causes that matter most to them.
