ALL IN: Boilermakers Making a Difference

How can Boilermakers be all-in and make a difference?

Uniting Purdue & the United Way

In the early 1980s, under the leadership of Purdue President Stephen Beering and Senior Vice President of Development, Charles Wise, Purdue University grew an organized United Way of Greater Lafayette campaign on campus. Today, Purdue faculty, staff, and friends collectively raise one of the largest campaigns in the community to benefit local agencies through the United Way of Greater Lafayette.

These partner United Way agencies ensure food and housing for families in crisis, mental health services for children, adult literacy education, and more. Many of these resources are crucial to the Purdue University community – to undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff – from family counseling to mental health and addiction services, disability services, senior services, and more.

The United Way and its partner agencies are also trusted university partners that collaborate year-round and across campus with faculty and student groups in engaged scholarship, service, and experiential learning.

Like the work we do here at Purdue, the United Way takes on challenges to find new and lasting solutions to problems. From basic needs such as food insecurity, shelter, and safety to mental health services, infant and maternal health, kindergarten readiness, and K-12 education to career readiness, the United Way is here to help our friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

Purdue’s excellence depends on the continued strength of the greater Lafayette Community. Please consider supporting the United Way so that our neighbors, colleagues, and friends can enjoy the high quality of life that has sustained this university for over 150 years.

Greater Lafayette Funded Partners

The United Way of Greater Lafayette funds agencies that believe the best way to improve lives is to mobilize the caring power of our community.

The United Way created a diverse network of human service providers, 25 agencies strong. Like the old adage “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime,” this network believes in the principle of alleviating poverty by facilitating self-sufficiency. The partners offer a comprehensive mix of programs and services to help Greater Lafayette children, families, individuals move through crises to stability, and from stability to self-sufficiency.

“I spent several years coordinating support for struggling working families. I did not know I was one step away from walking in their shoes. When I was in crisis, United Way made sure that I did not have to settle for less than quality childcare. now I can continue to fight for stable homes.” Jenni Murtaugh
