Summit Student Showcase 2024

Students from across Purdue’s campuses are invited to showcase community engagement projects as part of service-learning courses or engagement organizations at the Engagement and Service-Learning Summit on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 4:00 PM ET. Abstracts are due by Monday, February 5, 2024 at 5:00 PM ET.

Thursday, February 29, 2024, 4:00 – 5:30 PM ET, Discovery Learning Research Center (DLRC)

The goal of the session is to showcase student efforts with faculty, staff, community partners, and other students rather than judge them.

All students presenting at or attending the Showcase are asked to register for the Summit prior to the event via the Summit website.

Submission Types

Submissions will be accepted from all students at all Purdue campuses in one of two formats: wide-format printed poster or creative display. Students may re-use a poster or creative display from a previous event or develop a new one. All accepted submissions will be showcased both in person and on the event website.

Poster

Students will create a wide-format poster using PowerPoint that explains their project and its impact on themselves and the community. Students will present their posters in person at the Showcase. Posters should be printed no larger than 36 inches x 48 inches. Wide format printing is available on the West Lafayette campus on the second floor of WALC or at the John W. Hicks (HIKS) Undergraduate Library. The cost is $4 per linear foot.

A PDF of the poster should be submitted via the final submission survey by Thursday, February 22, 2024, 5:00 PM ET. During the week of the event, students are encouraged to drop off their printed posters to Dr. Lindsey Payne, Director of Service-Learning, in YOUNG 535 to be set up for the Showcase.

Select the buttons below to view the poster rubric, download the optional PowerPoint template, and view past Showcase posters.

Creative Display

Students will develop a creative demonstration or interactive display that captures the story of their Engagement project or experience and its impact on themselves and the community. This format is ideal for projects involving interactive elements with which the students would like the audience to engage such as small props, prototypes, models, dioramas, artifacts, artwork, or products. Please note: space at the DLRC is limited.

How to Submit

Any interested student or team wanting to present a poster or creative display should submit a brief abstract (max 150 words) by Monday, February 5, 2024, 5:00 PM ET via the application survey. Students presenting creative displays will also be asked to describe their intended display including the type of space accommodations they would need (e.g., table, power/outlets)

Students will receive notice of acceptance via email within 48 hours of abstract submission. The email will also contain a link to the final submission survey for submitting poster PDFs and any changes to authors, affiliations, or creative display set-ups ahead of the Showcase. Completion of the final submission survey (including submission of poster PDFs) is due by Thursday, February 22, 2024, 5:00 PM ET.

Presentations

Students with accepted posters or creative displays will present in person during the Showcase on Thursday, February 29, 2024, 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM ET. Poster presenters are encouraged to drop off their poster between Monday, February 26 and Wednesday, February 28 to Dr. Lindsey Payne, Director of Service-Learning, in YOUNG 535. For creative displays, please drop off materials to the DLRC before 12:00 PM ET (noon) on the day of the Showcase to be set up prior to the event.

All students presenting at or attending the Showcase are asked to register for the Summit prior to the event via the Summit website.

Awards

The top three presentations in each category (poster and creative display) will be awarded cash prizes of $150, $100, and $50, respectively, and awarded at the end of the Showcase. A student must be the first author of the presentation to be eligible for a prize. Rubrics will be used to identify the winners and can be found above.
