The Society for Neuroscience held its annual meeting in Chicago in mid-October with an attendance of over 30,000. PIIN hosted a social event to promote Purdue, a student recruitment booth that attracted over 50 visits, and “A Night at the Museum” at the Chicago Field Museum adjacent to the conference venue. The evening included three speakers all of whom highlighted different aspects of neuroscience that are areas of strength at Purdue. Dr. Bridgette Kelleher, assistant professor of psychological sciences, highlighted her telehealth program to identify children at risk for being affected by autism. Dr. Pedro Irazoqui, the Reilly Professor of Biomedical Engineering, introduced Purdue developed technologies and their potential for multiple clinical applications. He highlighted the ability to use electronic devices as effective clinical stimulators discussing both artificial limbs and contact lenses as examples of potential applications. Dr. Jessica Huber, professor of speech, language, and hearing sciences closed out the evening by discussing the difficulties that Parkinson’s’ patients have with communication. As part of her presentation, she provided a hands-on demonstration of the SpeechVive device she created and commercialized. The attendees ranged from philanthropic supporters to alumni, funding agency representatives, industry representatives and colleagues from other universities.
