Applications due May 20 for NIH-funded BRAINS program cohorts

April 15, 2019

BRAINS, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) program designed to increase the engagement and retention of early-career academic neuroscientists from underrepresented groups, is now accepting applications for its 2019 cohort. The deadline for applications is 9 a.m. (PT) on Monday, May 20, 2019.  Visit the program website to apply.

BRAINS (Broadening the Representation of Academic Investigators in Neurosciences) was created in 2011 to accelerate and improve the career advancement of neuroscience postdoctoral researchers and assistant professors from underrepresented groups targeted by the NIH's National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) R25 funding mechanism.

BRAINS participants are early career Ph.D. scientists in neuroscience-related fields from underrepresented groups, including racial and ethnic minorities and people with disabilities. Read more about eligibility criteria.

BRAINS has two pathways: fellows and affiliates. Fellows will attend a multi-day in-person symposium, participate in virtual peer mentoring circles and attend a cross-cohort symposium September 12-15, 2019 on Bainbridge Island near Seattle, Washington. Affiliates will participate in a series of virtual workshops and in virtual peer mentoring circles that follow the same format as the Fellows program. Virtual workshops are set to begin in August 2019. Both fellows and affiliates will be invited to join the annual BRAINS reunion at the Society for Neuroscience annual conference.
