WordPress and Cascade

Both WordPress and Cascade have strengths. When choosing your platform, consider:

WordPress is often the best fit for sites that require flexibility, storytelling features or frequent updates. The Purdue WordPress theme includes starter templates, block-based layouts and accessibility built in. Although the older WordPress theme is still supported, we recommend switching to the new one as soon as possible. The legacy version remains available for download on GitHub.

Cascade is often chosen for content-heavy sites that benefit from structured templates and centralized management. The new Cascade templates include branded layouts and updated blocks that simplify content entry while keeping the design consistent. Legacy Cascade templates are still supported but should be phased out. If you need them, the older set can be downloaded from GitHub.

When moving to the new Purdue theme, we strongly recommend starting with a new site rather than retrofitting an existing one. This approach avoids conflicts with outdated plug-ins and code, simplifies content cleanup and ensures your site is built with the newest features.

Purdue IT can provision a new WordPress account or Cascade project for you, and Purdue Brand Studio can guide you if there are questions about the site migration.

Web domains represent Purdue to the world, making strong governance essential. All requests for new domains, vanity URLs or updates must go through the Domain Governance Committee for review and approval. Revisions may be suggested before final approval is given. Purdue Brand Studio can help begin the process.

Vanity URL Examples

Vanity URLs make content easy to find while staying consistent with Purdue’s brand.

  • go.purdue.edu/new-content
  • purdue.link/new-content
  • purdue.ws/new-content
  • purdue.university/new-content

Campaign Links and QR Codes

  • Campaign URL Builder: Use Purdue’s Campaign URL Builder to create shortened, trackable links with UTM data.
  • QR codes: When appropriate, use QR codes as companions to short links for print or event materials.

This governance process protects Purdue’s digital presence while giving units the tools they need to reach audiences effectively.

Every site at Purdue is part of one larger digital ecosystem. Consistency matters. The Purdue WordPress and Cascade themes make it easier to follow brand rules with flexibility for departmental identity.

  • Logos: Always follow Purdue’s official logo usage standards.
  • Favicon: Though only 16×16 pixels, the favicon plays a big role in unifying Purdue sites across browsers. Download the official Purdue favicon.
  • Site settings: Elements like headers, footers, breadcrumbs, search options and starter templates are configurable within the theme. These options balance brand consistency with flexibility. Detailed instructions for configuring headers, footers, breadcrumbs, search options and templates are available on the following site settings pages:
    • View Cascade Site Settings
    • View WordPress Site Settings

Together, these settings ensure visitors recognize your site as part of Purdue while also finding the information unique to your unit.

The process for requesting a new site or redesign is collaborative and ensures both Purdue Brand Studio and Purdue IT support you from start to finish:

  1. Submit a request to tickets-webservices@purdue.edu.
