Compliance

Purdue websites must uphold standards that ensure accessibility, brand alignment, privacy, policy adherence and data security. Compliance is not only about meeting external regulations — it is about delivering inclusive, trustworthy and consistent digital experiences that reflect the university’s mission of learning, discovery and engagement.

Accessibility

Purdue is committed to building websites that are usable by everyone, regardless of ability, device or context. All sites must follow WCAG 2.1 AA standards, which define requirements for text, images, color contrast, navigation and multimedia.

Detailed web accessibility guidelines provide direction for editors and developers, including use of the digital color matrix, Siteimprove testing and theme-level compliance audits. For answers to common accessibility questions and implementation scenarios, visit the Web Accessibility FAQ page.

Brand Compliance

Consistency builds trust. Purdue’s brand identity guidelines define the proper use of logos, fonts, color palettes, editorial style and tone across all digital platforms. Following these standards ensures that every Purdue website communicates clearly and reinforces reputation.

Social Media Policy

Purdue-affiliated social media accounts must follow the university social media policy. This includes securing approval from the appropriate administrative leader (e.g., vice president, vice chancellor, vice provost, dean) and notifying the designated campus authority of your plans.

University Social Media Policy

The Electronic Information, Communication and Technology (EICT) Standard (S-5) establishes the university’s requirements for accessible and secure electronic content. Oversight from the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) ensures that accessibility and governance remain institutional standards for every Purdue site.

Information Technology Policy (S-5)

Protecting personal information is both a legal and ethical responsibility. Purdue’s privacy notice explains how personal data is collected, used and safeguarded on university websites, covering:

  • What personal information may be collected
  • How data is used for communication, analytics or services
  • How information is stored and protected
  • Users’ rights regarding their personal data
Purdue Privacy Notice

Website security and responsible data use are critical to maintaining trust with Purdue’s audiences. All data collected through websites, forms and analytics must follow university standards for protection and governance.

  • Secure Purdue — IT security resources, approved tools and safe computing practices.
  • Data Governance — Standards and procedures for managing and protecting institutional data.

Before implementing new tools or collecting user data, site owners should confirm compliance with these resources or consult Purdue Brand Studio.

Oversight of compliance is centralized to ensure consistency across the Purdue web ecosystem.

  • Purdue Brand Studio can assist with web accessibility, brand and compliance questions.
  • Units and departments are expected to maintain compliance checks as part of their ongoing content workflows.
  • Accessibility or policy-related issues with the Purdue web theme should be reported directly to Purdue Brand Studio.

By working together, we can ensure that Purdue’s digital presence reflects the university’s commitment to inclusivity, innovation and the persistent pursuit of the highest standards.
