Asian American and Asian Resource and Cultural Center hosting several virtual fall events

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue Asian American and Asian Resource and Cultural Center (AAARCC) will host several virtual events during the fall semester.

The Lunch and Learn Series, which is noon to 1 p.m., will be held via Zoom. Participants need to register online in advance of the sessions, all of which are on Thursdays. Events are:

  • Thursday (Sept. 3) — “Transracial and Transnational Adoption: Asian America Revisited.” Presenter: Xiang Zhou, assistant professor of educational studies.
  • Sept. 10 — “Tenant Laws in Indiana/Greater Lafayette.” Presenter: Leslie Charters, director of student legal services.
  • Sept. 17 — “Leading the Next Generation: Growing Our Community.” Presenters: Asian Student Union Board and Purdue Student Union Board.
  • Oct. 1 — “Who Am I?” Presenter: Lillian Evans, diversity specialist in the Department of Computer Science.
  • Oct. 15 — “Leveraging Geographic Information for Cultural Studies.” Presenter: Nicole Kong, associate professor in Purdue Libraries.
  • Oct. 29 — “What’s on My Ballot? Voting and Asian American Communities.” Presenter: Civic Engagement and Leadership Development (CELD) office.
  • Nov. 12 — “Asian and Pacific Islander Americans.” Presenter: Nerisa Ve’e Taua (Samoan), Purdue Sloan Scholar (Sloan Foundation Indigenous Graduate Partnership Program) and Student Staff, Native American Educational and Cultural Center.

Other main events this semester are:

  • Wednesday (Sept. 2) at 2 p.m. – Virtual training session: “Bias Against Asian and Asian American Students: Support and Response to the Current Climate.” A meeting link will be sent upon registration.
  • Sept. 14 at 12:30 p.m. – Great Lakes Asian American Student Services fall reading program with Indiana University and the University of Illinois. This weekly group meeting will review “Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning” by Cathy Park Hong. There will be a virtual meet and greet with Cathy Park Hong on Oct. 2. Registration is required.
  • Sept. 22 at 5 p.m. – “What is a CEO and How Do You Become One?” with Spencer Lee, CEO of Roto-Rooter. In this Business and Leadership Series, Lee will talk about what a CEO does and the pathways to that role. Registration is required.
  • Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. – “Innovative Pedagogies and Community Interventions to Reduce Prejudice, Stigma, and Discrimination” with Lisa Hanasono, an associate professor in the School of Media and Communications at Bowling Green State University. Registration is required.
