As artificial intelligence becomes a routine part of teaching, research, and administrative work at Purdue, faculty and staff need clear, practical guidance on how to use it well. The courses below are a self-paced learning series that helps Purdue employees build a working understanding of AI — from university policy and ethical use, to hands-on skills like prompt writing and tool selection, to applying AI thoughtfully in the classroom.
Each course is short, scenario-based, and designed to fit around a busy schedule. Together, they give participants the knowledge and confidence to use AI responsibly, effectively, and in line with Purdue’s institutional expectations.

Purdue AI Policy, Safety, & Ethics Course
Course Description
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly common part of teaching, learning, research, and administrative work. This self-paced course introduces Purdue instructors and staff to the university’s guidance for using AI responsibly, ethically, and in compliance with institutional expectations.
Through realistic examples and interactive activities, participants will explore Purdue’s AI policies and guidelines, learn to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI, and apply institutional guidance to common workplace and instructional scenarios. By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to make informed decisions about when and how AI can be used responsibly within Purdue University.

Participants will learn what AI is (and is not), explore effective prompt-writing strategies, and practice evaluating AI-generated content for accuracy, bias, and reliability. Through realistic workplace scenarios, learners will gain confidence using AI responsibly to support teaching, administrative tasks, and everyday productivity.

Participants will learn how to evaluate AI tools based on institutional guidance, data sensitivity, and intended use while recognizing when human expertise remains essential. Because AI technologies continue to evolve rapidly, this course serves as a foundational overview that will be updated regularly to reflect new approved tools, policies, and best practices.

Participants will explore how to design learning activities and assessments that support student learning outcomes, establish clear course policies and expectations for student AI use, evaluate the impact of AI on academic integrity and student skill development, and apply AI tools to enhance teaching practices—such as feedback, content creation, and accessibility, while maintaining pedagogical intent.
