Register for spring 2022 Certificates of Foundations, Practice in College Teaching

Instructors, staff, postdocs, and graduate students are invited to register by Jan. 22 for the four-week spring 2022 online session of the Certificate of Foundations in College Teaching that runs Monday, Jan. 24-Fri., Feb. 18.

The Foundations certificate is part of the College Teaching Development Program offered by the Center for Instructional Excellence (CIE). It provides an overview of evidence-based teaching practices and strategies. For the spring 2022 semester’s online version there will be no synchronous meetings, but participants are expected to engage with and respond to others in the Foundations Brightspace, and to write reflections. Participants should plan to devote approximately three hours during each week of the program.

Foundations covers central topics in college teaching and asks participants to reflect on concepts, experiences, and applications at the end of each topic. Core topics include:

  1. Making Learning Accessible
  2. Assessing Student Learning
  3. Creating a Learner-Centered Environment
  4. Applying the Science of Teaching and Learning

In addition, those who have an instructional role (broadly defined) in spring 2022 are invited to submit a proposal no later than Friday, Jan. 7, for the Certificate of Practice in College Teaching. The Practice certificate is inquiry-based, with participants identifying a challenge/opportunity that they will address spring semester using evidence-based practices, in consultation with a faculty mentor of their choosing. Participants may complete the Practice certificate multiple times over different semesters, as long as they have a teaching role during that semester and choose a new area of emphasis each semester. Details and guidelines for proposals are available on the College Teaching Development website.

Questions about the Certificates of Foundations or Practice in College Teaching may be emailed to dguberma@purdue.edu.
