End of Course Evaluation Questions

In fall 2021, the Student Course Evaluation Advisory committee modified the ten common questions to reflect the increase in learning experiences outside of a traditional “classroom.”  Compound questions were modified to enhance clarity and mirror scholarly literature on survey question design.   Departments may omit one or both of questions #3 & #4 if not relevant to the section or course.

Common Questions. [Revised Fall 2021]  All evaluations will have ten common questions:

  1. The course is well organized.
  2. The assignments aid me in achieving the course objectives.
  3. The projects or laboratories aid me in achieving the class objectives. [where relevant]
  4. The tests or exams aid me in achieving the course objectives. [where relevant]
  5. The instructor communicates clearly.
  6. The instructor effectively answers students’ questions.
  7. The instructor seems to care about my learning in this course.
  8. The instructor makes time to help students.
  9. The instructor is fair in evaluating my performance in the course.
  10. The instructor created an inclusive learning environment.

Question set responses:
1 = strongly disagree; 2 = disagree; 3 = neither agree nor disagree; 4 = agree; 5 = strongly agree

Optional questions. Five (5) optional questions may be added at the request of the
department/instructor. While units are encouraged to consider these optional questions, and
possibly others of their own design, no more than a total of fifteen (15) questions should be used
on end of the academic year student evaluation. Additional questions may also be chosen from
the more than 600 questions available in the PICES catalog.

  1. I feel that my instructor provides me choices and options.
  2. I feel understood by my instructor.
  3. My instructor conveyed confidence in my ability to do well in the course.
  4. My instructor encouraged me to ask questions.
  5. My instructor listens to how I would like to do things.
  6. My instructor tries to understand how I see things before suggesting a new way to do things.
  7. The instructor challenged me to do my best work.
  8. I understand what is expected of me in this course.
  9. The text for this course is helpful to me in learning the course material.
  10. The course web page is organized to promote my success in this course.
  11. The instructor returned assignments in a timely manner.

1 = strongly disagree; 2 = disagree; 3 = neither agree nor disagree; 4 = agree; 5 = strongly agree

Open-ended questions. All evaluations will have two (2) open-ended questions:

  1. We welcome your comments below. What is something/are some things that the instructor does well, e.g., something you hope the instructor will continue to do in the class in the future?
  2. Make a suggestion(s) for improving the course (a criticism alone is not helpful; tell your instructor how you would fix any problem).

In summary, the question total includes four (4) demographic questions, two (2) open-ended prompts, eight (8) to ten (10) common questions plus five (5) optional.
