TLCoP Jan. 23: AI-generated content & writing instruction

All Purdue West Lafayette instructors, teaching assistants, staff, and students are invited to join the Teaching and Learning Community of Practice (TLCoP) online Mon., Jan. 23, 3-4 p.m. ET, to begin the conversation of the semester’s topic of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and their affects on the teaching and learning of writing.

TLCoP’s first session of the semester will explore what we know — so far– about AI writing tools and to share our thoughts about what this may mean for writing instructors and our students. We will hear from a panel of instructors who will share their insights on the subject and address our burning questions.

Using input from this session, we hope to delve deeper into the subject of AI-generated content in future Spring 2022 sessions. The February session will look at What do AI tools mean for student learning? March will focus on Teaching strategies related to AI and student learning.

TLCoP provides the space for instructors to engage in informal conversations and brainstorming around salient teaching and learning topics at Purdue. We do not expect attendees to have all the answers or to be “experts” on a topic. We believe we can all learn from one another by talking through issues and possible solutions. We will begin our time together by going into breakout rooms to generate ideas and questions before we bring them to the larger group and our panelists. All are invited to participate, but you are welcome to just listen in.

If you are interested in the topic of AI generated writing but don’t know much about it yet, you can learn more by watching this brief (6.59 min.) overview video from the The WallStreet Journal’s Tech News Briefing Podcast, ChatGPT, Explained. You may also submit your questions and ideas on the topic to rfundato@purdue.edu.

Please register for this Zoom session. Further details on the community of practice are available on the TLCoP website.
