The basic skills and abilities required for becoming a firefighter within the Purdue University Fire Department include the following:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong commitment to customer service and use of good judgment
  • Good public relations skills
  • The physical and mental capability of performing all duties required of a firefighter/emergency medical technician
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must have earned a high school diploma or GED
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • One year experience as emergency medical technician is required. State of Indiana Paramedic License is preferred.
  • Must pass Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
