Neurodegenerative Disorders
Neurodegeneration is the umbrella term for the progressive loss of structure or function of neurons, including death of neurons. Many neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s occur as a result of neurodegenerative processes. There are many similarities of these diseases on a sub-cellular level. Women appear to be at an increased risk for Alzheimer’s, although women’s longer life spans may contribute to this differential risk. Specifically, the loss of hormones at menopause has emerged as a significant risk factor for Alzheimer’s.Graham Cooks
