Intercultural Knowledge and Competence

Intercultural Knowledge and Competence is "a set of cognitive, affective, and behavioral skills and characteristics that support effective and appropriate interaction in a variety of cultural contexts (Bennett, J.M. 2008)

The Intercultural Attitudes Skills and Knowledge Short Scale (A.S.K.S) assesses the degree to which individuals internalize attitudes, skills and knowledge associated with effective and appropriate intercultural communication. There are two versions of these short scales, a regular version (ASKS2)  and a PLUS version (ASKS2+).

The (ASKS2) is quantitative using a six point Likert Scale based on Bloom’s Affective Domain. The (ASKS2+) includes the same six point Likert Scale as the regular version (ASKS2) but additionally students do critical thinking, and provide extra qualitative data using reflective writing based on description, interpretation, and evaluation.

Once you decide whether you will be using the (ASKS2) or the (ASKS2+) next decide how many times you want to administer the assessment. Each PDF packet includes assessments for up three administrations of the (ASKS2) and the (ASKS2+). You can choose to administer the assessment:

  1. Before or at the start of the program/class (PRE) and at the end of the program/class (POST),
  2. Sometime during the program/class (IN RETROSPECT) (e.g. halfway through or after few weeks/days) and at the end of the program/class (POST),
  3. Before or at the start of the program/class (PRE), during the program (IN RETROSPECT) and at the end of the program/class (POST), OR
  4. At the end of the program/class (POST).
