IUSM admissions representatives will be hosting their popular advising appointments with our students again this semester. Because of COVID they will be phone appointments this semester.

This is your opportunity to speak one-on-one with an IU School of Medicine Admissions Representative one-on-one and to ask any questions you have about the process and your future application.

You sign up through an online system with IU. If you find at some point your schedule has changed and you can no longer keep the appointment, please let them know.

Currently our appointments are remote (Teams, WebEx, Zoom, or phone appointments). These work well as we often are showing you how to navigate the online resources you will need for your future applications, national exams, professional school resources, etc.

If you feel you need to meet in-person, please email your pre-professional advisor directly and we can arrange an in-person meeting. This will need to be in the morning in Young Hall 132.

Each fall, directors of the Legislative Internship program come to campus to inform students about the spring internships. Typically they come to campus in September and applications are due at the end of October.

The Legislative Internship program is a paid program that provides a fantastic experience for students from all majors and backgrounds.

The Statehouse employs college students as interns in Indianapolis during the spring semester each year in these areas: Communication, Information Technology, Policy Analysis, Constituent Services, Graphic & Print Design, and Fiscal Analysis.

Sophomores and above including graduate students may apply. Applications are typically due toward the end of October. Keep this opportunity in mind for the future.

For many years professional programs have worked to diversify their classes. It is vital that they do so. In healthcare it actually saves lives to have a more diverse workforce. There is research showing that in areas with more Black doctors, Black people live longer.

Professional programs have very strong feelings about the affirmative action ruling. This could potentially be an interesting interview question which is why we are gathering some of these statements here.

The PA profession is planning to change their name from Physician Assistant to Physician Associate. The national organization has transitioned to American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA.org), however, fully implementing the name is complicated. The AAPA currently recommends that PAs continue to use the title of "physician assistant" as their official legal title in clinical settings.

The University of Colorado School of Medicine is offering virtual shadowing experiences open to all pre-health students. As of now they only have one session up and ready, but are planning more by Labor Day. Email Bre McKercher at breanna.mckercher@cuanschutz to enroll. (This is a known organization to our office that regularly offers programming to students--usually they offer mountain emergency medicine and tropical emergency medicine courses.)

Two pre-medical students from the University of Central Florida are creating an opportunity to "shadow" virtually by having physicians from various specialties present case-based scenarios on YouTube live. Session times will vary in time/days based on physician availability. They will inform their audience a week prior to the sessions via email. Sign up to be part of their email list by filling out the google form on their Webshadowers website. Learn to make clinical decisions through online case studies, assignments, and zoom meetings at Pre-PT Virtual Observation Hours. AccessLex is a non-profit that helps pre-law students, law students, and law school graduates plan their education and educational financing so that they can attend law school with as little debt as possible. They offer amazing and free resources to students. These include great webinars.

AccessLex Institute has a variety of online workshops on paying for law school, public interest loans, budgeting and other great topics. Register for these workshops.

Scribing is an important job that takes considerable training. You essentially follow a physician, PA, or nurse practitioner and maintain all the charting so that they can focus on the patient.

Others on the medical team count on you being there. Do not take this responsibility on lightly or consider this a summer job. You can learn a lot about taking patient histories, building rapport with patients, what tests should be ordered, interpreting tests, charting (obviously), and developing a differential diagnosis.

In September 2023, the GRE general exam was cut in half! Time to take the test will be about 2 hours. The same topics will be covered.
