Public safety telecommunicators to be honored during Monday (April 15) event at Lafayette City Building
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A celebration honoring the dispatchers from the Purdue University, West Lafayette and Lafayette police departments, and Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office will take place from 3-3:30 p.m. Monday (April 15) in the City Council Chambers of the Lafayette City Building. The event is part of national Public Safety Telecommunications Week, which is set each year for the second week of April.
The weeklong celebration – April 14-20 this year - is a time to thank those who dedicate their lives to serving the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During the week, special events are held across the nation so U.S. citizens can hear about and learn about their hard work and dedication.
Initially conceived in 1981 by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in California, Telecommunicators Week was created to raise public awareness of the hard work and dedication of public safety telecommunicators. In October 1991, APCO International successfully lobbied and received a formal proclamation by Congress, which was signed by President Bill Clinton, designating the second full week in April as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
To honor the women and men that serve in the dispatch centers for the law enforcement agencies in Tippecanoe County, a proclamation signed by Indiana Gov. Eric J. Holcomb will be read by the agencies’ department heads during Monday’s event. The public is invited.
