Appointments, honors and activities
• Appointments and promotions:
- Tim Moore, associate professor of economics, has been named a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research.
- Justin Tobias, professor and head of the Department of Economics and senior associate dean in the Krannert School of Management, was elected chair of the section on economics, finance and business of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis.
• Faculty and staff honors:
- Rhonda Phillips, dean of the Honors College, and four of her students recently participated in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Sixth World Forum on Statistics, Knowledge and Policy. Phillips presented research on community well-being as part of a panel addressing, “Happiness in Public Policy: A Step-by-step Guide Based on Experience in the Happiness Movement.” The students — Marly Beck, Kaylee Brunsting, Jeremy Dewell and Angus Pinkerton — are the first undergraduate students to present research posters at the event. • Alumni honors:
- Gerry Simms, a 2009 graduate of the Krannert School of Management, was named a 2018 John Wooden Global Leadership fellow by the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles. Simms is a former United States Marine Corps captain who was twice deployed overseas, including to Afghanistan. More information is online.
• Student honors:
- Alex Lin, along with his three teammates from other universities across the country, secured third in the finals of the Capture the Flag competition at the world’s largest student-led cybersecurity event: the 15th annual Cyber Security Awareness Worldwide games at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering. Lin’s team, named “Perfect Blue,” competed in a fast-paced competition Nov. 8-10 that covered technology, current events and history. These students were among an elite group of undergraduates who were selected to compete at the Cyber Security Awareness Worldwide finals based on their performance during a 48-hour, around-the-clock series of software hacking contests.
• Rankings:
- Krannert School of Management’s Master of Science in business analytics and information management was ranked No. 1 in CIO Magazine’s list of the top 10 data science master’s degree programs. More information is online.
- The School of Industrial Engineering master’s program was named as one of the best programs for 2019 by Online Masters. It also was recognized as among the best for financial support. More information is online.
