Best Practices for Finding a Therapist

  • Review the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) guide to finding a LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist
  • If possible, look for a therapist that is located close to you so that you can meet with them regularly without having to cancel appointments
  • Ask your health insurance company to email you a list of in-network therapists located near you.
  • Check with your insurance company regarding the number of sessions covered, co-pays, and dealing with out-of-network reimbursements before your first session. Learn more about how health insurance works.
  • Verify with the therapist regarding the insurance they accept (although we have tried to list insurance for each therapist, this information can change over time)
  • Be on time for your appointment and cancel any appointment 48 hours ahead of time in extenuating circumstances (this will help avoid late cancellation charges)
  • If you do not have a car:
    • Check with a friend and see if they are willing to provide transportation
    • Use the CityBus service
    • Use a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft
  • Get a refill for your medication a week out in advance.

Memo: "Treatment of Psychological Diagnoses at PUSH
October 30, 2018

The Purdue University Student Health Service (PUSH) recognizes that psychological concerns and psychotropic medication are issues for a number of students and families. PUSH also recognizes that the resources of PUSH medical providers, within the scope of their clinical practice, have the training and skillset to provide limited services to students who present with an uncomplicated, single psychiatric diagnosis, and are in need of short term medication. PUSH providers may write one, 14-30 day, prescription for a student who has been on the same medication in the past three months with no untoward effects. PUSH providers may evaluate a student requesting new medication when the student brings in clinical records or summary from a previous therapist or psychiatrist (and in the case of ADHD, diagnostic testing). PUSH medical providers cannot provide the on-going level of care that students may need for a psychological concern. PUSH medical providers cannot provide care to students who have been hospitalized within the last 6 months, who may not be responding to psychotropic medication, or who are thinking of harming self or others. These students will be referred from PUSH medical providers to a higher level of care."
