The Innovative Learning Team at West Lafayette, the Center for Faculty Excellence and the Office of Instructional Technology at Purdue Northwest, and the Purdue Fort Wayne Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT) offer several workshops and sessions in October to help instructors with grading, mid-term grades, quizzes, and inclusive curricula.

Are you being haunted by grading free-response questions, diagrams, mathematical problem sets, and other traditionally paper-based assessments? Spooked by artificial intelligence and rigid rubrics? Pick up some tricks for efficient, flexible options in Gradescope and treat your students to better feedback.

Brightspace Quiz Creation & Submission Views

This workshop will first show you how to create a quiz in Brightspace, various quiz question types and key quiz settings. The session will also cover how to display quiz results and feedback to students with submission views.

Using Student Feedback & Performance Data to Enhance Teaching
Wed., Oct. 19, 1:30-2:30 p.m. ET
Join this session for guidance on interpreting and using student data to enhance learning experiences and outcomes. We will show you how to collect and triangulate student feedback and performance data to make informed and meaningful adjustments in your course. Various services and resources will also be identified to help you address teaching and learning concerns.

Rethinking the Syllabus to Increase Student Engagement

Your syllabus is usually your first opportunity to communicate your teaching beliefs and course expectations with your students. In this workshop, we will discuss the best practices for developing a learner-centered syllabus that fosters academic success, increases student engagement, and creates an effective learning environment.

Foundational Technology for Faculty

Explore the core components of instructional technology in the Foundational Faculty Training module in the PNW Brightspace Instructor Training Course. These self-paced topics include: creating Brightspace content and communication, flexibility in modality, grading, and using activities. Earn a badge for each completed area. This module is part of a series of competencies created for you by the Office of Instructional Technology. Look for our upcoming functional faculty training module that takes a deeper dive into technology tools supported at PNW.

Fall 2022 Pedagogy Circle meeting – “Towards Inclusive Curricula: Succeeding Despite Challenges”

Co-sponsored by the Department of History, Philosophy, Politics and Economics and the Center for Faculty Excellence, the Pedagogy Circle is a forum where faculty gather to discuss what they love most – issues and problems relevant to teaching practices. Participants bring valuable insights and input to these meetings, but also benefit – through discussion, shared teaching tips, etc.

Writing Retreat

A writing retreat provides a focused block of time and supportive environment for you to commit to and have some level of accountability for accomplishing a research goal. There will be no planned programming, instead it will be a time for you to focus on your research/writing goals and hopefully be very productive! The Writing Retreat is in-person and virtual.
