Certificate of Foundations in College Teaching begins Sept. 12

Purdue West Lafayette faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students interested in instructional development may register for the Certificate of Foundations in College Teaching, which runs Sept. 12-Oct. 7, 2022. Register by Thursday, Sept. 8.

Offered virtually by the Center for Instructional Excellence and the Purdue Teaching Academy, the Foundations program provides an overview of evidence-based teaching practices and strategies. The delivery approach is asynchronous, but participants will be expected to engage with and respond to other participants on discussion boards in Brightspace and write reflections. Registration is required and participants should plan to devote approximately three hours during each week of the program. Core topics include:

  1. Making Learning Accessible
  2. Assessing Student Learning
  3. Creating a Learner-Centered Environment
  4. Applying the Science of Teaching and Learning

Foundations is one of two College Teaching Development Programs offered by the Innovative Learning Team via the Center for Instructional Excellence and the Teaching Academy.

The Certificate of Practice in College Teaching is an inquiry-based, semester-long program that requires participants to have a teaching role, broadly defined, during a semester. Participants identify a challenge/opportunity that they will address using evidence-based practices, in consultation with a faculty mentor of their choosing. The Practice Certificate may be completed multiple times over different semesters, as long as participants have a teaching role during that semester and choose a different area of emphasis each time. Proposals for fall semester 2022 are due during the first week of the semester/term or when your mentorship/advising project begins. To participate, or for details on either program, visit the College Teaching Development website. For questions about the program, email teachercertificate@purdue.edu

The College Teaching Development Program is part of Innovative Learning, Purdue West Lafayette’s hub approach to connect instructors to the resources they need to engage students, develop courses in any instructional modality, and enhance learning across the University. Members include the Center for Instructional Excellence, Libraries and the School of Information Studies, Purdue Online, Envision Center, and Teaching and Learning Technologies.
