September instructional workshops highlight grades, engagement, videos
Exams, engagement, analytics, videos and the Brightspace Grades tool are just a few of the topics Purdue instructors can learn more about during face-to-face and online sessions in September, offered by the Office of Instructional Technology at Purdue Northwest, the Innovative Learning Team at West Lafayette, and the Purdue Fort Wayne Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT). Following is an updated list of sessions as of Sept, 7, 2021.
Purdue Northwest
Level Up Workshop Series: Grade Center

Grade columns got you down? Looking to explore your grade tool options? This may be the workshop for you! Join our Educational Technologist to learn more about the Grades tool in Brightspace and take the Grades tool to the next Level in this Brightspace demo. Then build, with Office of Instructional Technology assistance, during the last 30 minutes in a “Work Sprint.”
Level Up Workshop Series: Engagement

Getting and keeping our students engaged in the learning process takes careful thought and planning. Come to this session to Level Up student engagement! Learn about the factors that impact student engagement and get ideas for how you can create an engaged learning environment.

Brightspace Exams
Sept. 9, 1-1:50 p.m., Online
Looking to offer exams through Brightspace? This workshop will show you the full range of features available in the Brightspace Quizzes tool.
This session will offer an in-depth introduction to the Quizzing tool in Brightspace, including an overview of the question types, how to set up your quiz to grade and transfer to your Grades, how to add accommodations and special access to quizzes, and how to ensure academic integrity during online exams.
This workshop is for faculty who are already generally familiar with Brightspace and are looking to use it to offer exams.
Classroom Engagement and Discussion Boards
Sept. 15, 2-2:50 p.m., Online
Digital tools offer a variety of ways to engage with your students, both in-class and online. This workshop will cover tools and tips for better student engagement.
Purdue offers a variety of supported tools meant to engage students, either with their instructor or with each other. This virtual workshop will introduce faculty to tools including iClickers, Hotseat, and Brightspace Discussion boards, and include both use cases and best practices for using them to engage students.
This workshop is for faculty looking for new ways to engage students in face-to-face, hybrid and online courses and requires no prior experience with the tools.
In-Video Quizzing using Kaltura
Sept. 21, 1:30-2:20 p.m., Online
One of the biggest concerns for faculty delivering online, hybrid or flipped classes is that students aren’t watching or paying attention to the videos they have uploaded. Kaltura, Purdue’s video hosting service, offers In-Video Quizzing, which requires students to answer questions embedded inside your course videos and can improve both attention and retention. This workshop will introduce faculty to both In-Video Quizzing and Analytics, and cover how to use them in your Brightspace course.
Worried that your students aren’t paying attention to your course videos? In-Video Quizzing in Kaltura may be the solution.
This workshop is for faculty who want to ensure that students are engaging with their course videos, and requires no prior experience with Kaltura.
Turnitin Best Practices

Ensuring academic integrity is one of the biggest challenges facing faculty today. Learn how Turnitin can help meet that challenge and create better writers.
Turnitin is Purdue’s plagiarism detection tool, and offers a robust set of features to detect academic dishonesty. This online workshop will cover how to deploy Turnitin to check student submissions in Brightspace, how to read the Turnitin Similarity Score and report, and some best practices for using it with your students to prevent plagiarism.
This workshop is for faculty looking for a way to ensure academic integrity on written work and requires no experience with Brightspace or Turnitin.

Teaching Effectively with Zoom (Virtual)

Creating and Grading Assignments in Brightspace

In this workshop, we will explore your options for creating, delivering, collecting, and grading assignments in Brightspace. We will use the Brightspace Assignment and Discussion tools to create new assignments and discuss various setting options to accomplish your goals.

Doctors get sued for malpractice. Lawyers get sued for malpractice. What about us? Do our decisions about grading or whether students have cheated, or even our teaching strategies, subject us to legal liability? Thanks to the students who have occasionally sued their instructors, there are mostly positive answers to those questions.
Creating Instructional Videos with Camtasia

In this hands-on workshop, participants will be guided to record a short instructional video with screen recording or PowerPoint narration. This session focuses on the most commonly used editing features of Camtasia for creating effective instructional videos. Practice files will be provided during the session. Note: All full-time faculty and staff at Purdue University Fort Wayne can download Camtasia (self-supported computer and home request). Please visit the Purdue University Community Hub.
