Pre-semester instructor sessions highlight student voices, assessment & integrity tools, peer review, Brightspace, BoilerCast

The Innovative Learning Team at West Lafayette, the Office of Instructional Technology at Purdue Northwest, and the Purdue Fort Wayne Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT) offer several workshops and sessions beginning Jan. 7 to help instructors prepare for the start of the Spring semester.

Brightspace Basics

Jan. 11, 10-11 a.m.

This flipped workshop will provide a brief overview of the Brightspace interface for new users. The remainder of the session will be designated for Q&A and requested demonstrations.

Teaching and Learning Forum: Student Voices

Jan. 12, 11 a.m.-12 noon

This session, hosted by the Office of the Provost and the Teaching Academy, will provide faculty an opportunity to hear feedback from students who had a diverse set of experiences during the fall semester. Students will share what they thought went best during the semester, the challenges they faced, and how they dealt with quarantine and other challenges. 

Deep Dive: Assessment Tools

Jan. 12, 1:30-2:30 p.m.

This workshop will start with a short exploration of the assessment tools in Brightspace, and then look at integrated tools like Variate, Gradescope and Hotseat that can supplement your assessment toolbox. 

BoilerCast Drop-in Sessions 

Jan. 13 and 20, 2-3 p.m.

An open session where attendees can come with questions and/or listen in to what questions others have about Boilercast. 

Deep Dive: Integrity Tools

Jan. 15, 10-11a.m.

This session will focus on the three integrity tools integrated into Brightspace: Examity (proctoring), Respondus (proctoring and lockdown browser), and Turnitin (plagiarism and grammar checking). 

Brightspace Drop-In Help Sessions

Daily

These drop-in sessions allow opportunities for instructors to bring questions and/or seek assistance in finalizing gradebooks.

Peer Review Workshop

Jan. 7, 9-11 a.m.

We’ll explain the principles of quality peer review and demonstrate each step of the process.  After this workshop you will be prepared to conduct effective peer reviews of teaching. 

Best Practices for Communicating with Students During Duty-Week

Jan. 7, 12 noon-1 p.m. 

During this session, we will discuss effective strategies that can be implemented at the  beginning of the semester to engage with your students, help them understand expectations and check their  progress throughout the semester.

Brightspace Course Navigation and Organization

Jan. 7, 2-3:00 p.m.

Join this session to learn about Brightspace tools and course templates that will help you organize your online course content effectively.  The facilitators will explain how to use these tools and templates to simplify course navigation and support student success.

Open Lab — Creating and Grading Assignments in Brightspace

Jan. 13, 11:00 a.m.-12 noon

During this open lab, we will answer any questions related to creating and grading Assignments in Brightspace. You can also refer to the new assignments guide on the CELT website.
