Derek Schultz
Spokesperson for Indianapolis
Derek Schultz’s path to communications started with a love of sports — and a dream of calling games for the New York Knicks. That passion led to a career in sports media, where he spent more than a decade as a radio host, columnist and podcaster in Indianapolis, building a reputation as a trusted voice and skilled storyteller.
Today, Derek brings that same energy and insight to his role as lead media and public relations specialist and deputy spokesperson at Purdue University. He serves as a primary media contact for Purdue’s presence in Indianapolis, leading earned media efforts that highlight the university’s growth, research and impact in the capital city.
With experience on both sides of the media landscape, Derek understands how to craft stories that resonate and how to position them effectively. He works closely with university leadership and faculty to prepare for media opportunities; contributes to crisis communications efforts; and helps ensure Purdue’s voice is clear, credible and consistent. He also continues to stay connected to the sports world as a columnist for the Indianapolis Business Journal and a regular voice on local radio and podcasts.
Derek earned his bachelor’s degree in communications and broadcast from Indiana University. He and his wife live in Indianapolis with their son. They enjoy traveling and share a goal of visiting all 50 states as a family.
