Supplemental Instruction Leader

This role is only available for students in West Lafayette

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders are student leaders who provide weekly, peer-led study sessions for traditionally challenging courses at Purdue in West Lafayette. The role of an SI Leader is to support students in their assigned course develop a better understanding of the course material through active, collaborative learning involving critical thinking, transferable study skills, and fun. Rather than teaching or directly answering questions, SI Leaders facilitate and guide students to finding answers for themselves. SI Leaders typically work with small to medium sized groups of students, with some courses occasionally having large groups before exams.

Application Process 

The application to become an SI Leader for the Fall 2026 semester opens on February 1st and will close on Saturday, February 28th at 11:59 PM

To apply for the SI Leader, you must submit an online application which will include:

  • An updated resume 
  • Responses to the following short answer questions:
    • Why do you want to work at the Academic Success Center?
    • What excites you about the SI Leader position?
    • What skills or experiences do you have that would make you a strong student leader at the ASC?
  • Contact information for at least 2 professional references (previous employers, faculty, staff, etc.) 
    • References will receive a short survey to complete via email 

SI Leader Application 

Selection Timeline 

  • Submit your online application by 11:59 PM on Saturday, February 28
  • If selected, participate in a Group Interview the week of March 8
  • If selected, participant in an Individual Interview between March 23 and April 10
  • Hiring notifications will be made by April 17, if not earlier. 

Qualifications

In order to become an SI leader, a student must:

  • Be an undergraduate Purdue student in West Lafayette
    • Preferred - Candidates who have completed two semesters
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in good judicial standing with the university
  • Meet course requirements (See Fall 2026 Course Requirements Here)
  • Be able to commit to working 10-15 hours per week in this position
  • Be able to attend the two-day pre-semester training
  • Be available for monthly team meetings in the evening, as well as additional meetings based on your schedule
  • Have a desire to support your fellow students
  • Have strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Be willing to collaborate, accept feedback, and present new ideas
  • Be able to work independently and complete tasks as instructed and on time

Responsibilities of an SI Leader

  • Attend all lectures for assigned SI course
  • Plan and facilitate two or three 50-minute sessions a week
  • Hold one office hour a week
  • Meet with course faculty throughout the semester
  • Meet with SI Leader team and professional staff supervisor throughout the semester
  • Attend all SI monthly meetings
  • Additional documentation, administrative tasks, and professional development opportunities

Hours and Compensation 

  • SI Leaders typically work between 10-15 hours per week with a starting wage of $13.25/hour
