My research program is centered on one overarching question: How do individuals and organizations make natural resource decisions in the context of social-ecological change? I consider natural resource decisions broadly to include management, utilization, conservation, preservation, as well as no action. I examine natural resource decision making processes at multiple scales in multiple contexts, with a particular focus on how individuals and organizations make natural resource decisions in response to various ecological, climatic, social, economic, political, and cultural changes and how various natural resource decisions subsequently impact individuals, households, communities, organizations, and landscapes.

Specialization: critical security studies, ecologies of war, death and temporality, anthropology of material things, spatial politics, forensic ethnography, corporate accountability, health justice, Middle East.
Dr. Rubaii is a cultural anthropologist who studies the materiality of structural violence, especially ecological arrangements between living and nonliving things. Her most recent project explores the ecological impacts of less-than-lethal counterinsurgency in Iraq and how displaced Anbari farmers in Iraq survive war-made landscapes designed to preclude possibilities for organized resistance. Her next ethnographic project approaches the corporate-military enterprise of cement production in post-invasion Iraq, and how the cement industry enforces global regimes of race, class, and extraction.

My research is in the broad areas of social inequality and social movements. More recently, I have begun to focus on higher education. Topics I study include: gender and its intersections with race, caste, and class; state power, development and globalization, social movements (including transnational movements). Special interest on India/South Asia. Much of my work adopts a global focus and draws attention to the ways in which disadvantaged groups, particularly in the non-western world, engage in daily resistances and collective protests to demand rights. As the Butler Chair and Director of the Butler Center, I pursue research in the area of higher education that is focused on leadership, inclusive excellence, and faculty satisfaction.

My core research is system modeling and decision making for complex system/operation design, monitoring, and evaluation. By analyzing the dynamics of system behaviors and dependencies among individual agents within the systems, we may develop a policy (evidence-based practice) to manage such system and mitigate its risks. Applications of this concept include manufacturing, warehouses, supply chains, water treatment system for mission to Mars, riot prediction, humanitarian aids, healthcare engineering, as well as addressing global development challenges.
