Yoshio Tanaka

Dr. Yoshio Tanaka is Executive Officer of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), and concurrently serves as Director General of its Department of Information Technology and Human Factors.
He received his Dr. Eng. from Keio University in 1995 and joined the Electrotechnical Laboratory in 2000, conducting research on parallel and distributed computing and large-scale computing systems.
He later served as Director of the Information Technology Research Institute, Director of the Information Security Department, and Deputy Director of the Research Strategy Planning Department, leading institute-wide digital infrastructure, information security, and research strategy. He also played a leading role in developing Japan’s national AI computing infrastructure, including ABCI.
Appointed Director General in January 2023 and Executive Officer in October 2023, he oversees frontier fields spanning artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity, digital platforms, and human measurement and intervention technologies. He leads large-scale national projects in AI and robotics with Japan’s Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, with particular emphasis on Physical AI and its trustworthy implementation in industry and society.
