Naoshi Sugiyama is President of Nagoya University and Executive Trustee and Vice Chancellor of the Tokai National Higher Education and Research System. A distinguished scholar in theoretical astronomy and astrophysics, he has built an internationally recognized career focused on cosmology, observational cosmology, the cosmic microwave background, the large-scale structure of the universe, and the thermal history of the cosmos.
Dr. Sugiyama earned his Doctor of Science from Hiroshima University after completing graduate and undergraduate studies in physics at Waseda University. He has held academic appointments at the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, and Nagoya University, where he later served as Dean of the School and Graduate School of Science, Trustee and Vice President, and Provost. He assumed the presidency of Nagoya University in 2022. His honors include the Nishinomiya Yukawa Memorial Prize, the JSPS Prize, and the Hayashi Chushiro Prize. He is a member of leading scientific societies, including the Japan Astronomical Society, the International Astronomical Union, and the Physical Society of Japan.
