Masahiro Kitagawa

Director, Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology, The University of Osaka; Program Director, Moonshot Goal 6, Japan Science and Technology Agency
Professor Masahiro Kitagawa earned his B.Eng. (1981), M.Eng. (1983), and Ph.D. in Quantum Physics (1994) from The University of Osaka. Before joining the university in 1993, he conducted pioneering research in quantum optics and quantum information at NTT Basic Research Laboratories.
Professor Kitagawa is internationally recognized for his seminal contributions to quantum science. He co-authored the foundational paper that established the concept of Squeezed Spin States; the paper was selected as one of the Physical Review A 50th Anniversary Milestones in 2020. His work spans quantum computing, quantum information, quantum measurement and sensing, and quantum biology.
During his tenure at the Graduate School of Engineering Science, The University of Osaka (1993–2024), Professor Kitagawa led several major national research initiatives, including Japan’s first quantum computing project. Since 2020, he has served as Program Director for JST Moonshot Goal 6, which aims to realize a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer by 2050, and the Project Leader of the Quantum Software Research Hub (QSRH), part of Japan’s national Quantum Technology Innovation Hubs (QIH). He also serves on the Japanese government’s expert panel on quantum technology and innovation, contributing to national quantum strategy and policy. He co-founded QunaSys Inc. in 2018 and QuEL Inc. in 2021.
