In support of the Healthy Boiler Program’s physical health pillar, the Center for Healthy Living (CHL) on Purdue's West Lafayette campus again brings its 14-week diabetes program titled "Taking Control of My Diabetes" to those living with Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. The first two sessions of 2021 begin on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27.

Led by Cheryl Laszynski, registered nurse health coach, and Megan Shidler, registered dietitian at the Center for Healthy Living, along with Lindsay Bloom, health coach at Purdue Fort Wayne, the program will cover sessions on a variety of topics related to Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes -- including how nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress affect Type 2 and prediabetes. The goal of the program is to help participants better manage their condition and live healthier lives. Participants also will have access to expert services of the center’s health care professionals, including:

  • A registered nurse who is a health and wellness coach.
  • A pharmacist who is specially trained in medication therapy management.
  • A registered dietitian who will assist with individualized meal planning.

Eligible participants will receive a glucose meter and test strips to check their blood glucose levels.

The sessions in the Jan. 26 program series take place from 3 to 4 p.m. every Tuesday through May 4. Sessions in the Jan. 27 program series take place from noon to 1 p.m. every Wednesday through April 28.

Interested individuals should register by Jan. 18 via the Healthy Boiler Portal. Registration link can be found under “Wellness Events” on the portal’s homepage. Questions regarding the program can be directed to 765-494-0111.

Individuals living with Type 1 diabetes are able to meet monthly with a CHL health coach but are not required to participate in the 14-week “Taking Control of My Diabetes” program to take advantage of the test strips and blood sugar meter opportunity. Contact CHL for more information at 765-494-0111.

Healthy Boiler workshops are free to all benefits-eligible faculty and staff and dependents covered on a Purdue medical plan.
