For many, summer months bring warmer weather and longer exposure time outside in the sun. To help individuals be better prepared for their fun in the sun, a skin cancer awareness workshop is being presented as part of the Healthy Boiler Program. The workshop will take place from noon to 1 p.m. May 22 via a GoToMeeting link, which will be sent before the start of the workshop to those who sign up to attend.

Whitney Soto, registered nurse health coach at the Center for Healthy Living on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus, will present.

“The sun has the ability to positively influence our lives in many ways,” Soto says. “It helps release serotonin (our ‘feel-good hormone’), helps with the production of vitamin D and makes us feel good in general. However, there is some danger involved in overexposure to the sun’s UV rays. In recognition of Skin Cancer Awareness Month and in support of the physical health and behavioral health pillars of the Healthy Boiler Program, the workshop will also cover important factors to take into consideration to decrease skin cancer risks when spending time outdoors.”

Those interested in attending should register via the Healthy Boiler Portal by May 21. Registration link is under the “Engage” tab, “Wellness Events” on the portal’s homepage.

Healthy Boiler workshops are free to all benefits-eligible faculty, staff and dependents covered on a Purdue health plan. Any questions about the workshop can be directed to the Center for Healthy Living at 765-494-0111.

Cancer care available if needed

As a reminder, in 2020 Purdue University Human Resources – Benefits implemented Verdi Cancer Direct, which helps those diagnosed with cancer receive a more personalized, coordinated approach to high-quality cancer care. The partnership between the University, Horizon Oncology & Research Center and Verdi Oncology makes this benefit possible to Purdue’s benefits-eligible faculty, staff and dependents covered on a Purdue health plan. To learn more about the partners, oncologists, program and how to get started, see the Verdi Cancer Direct webpage.
