How to Enroll in Benefits video

Before you log on, make sure you have the following handy:

  • Purdue career account and BoilerKey
  • Names, Social Security numbers and birth dates for your dependents on beneficiaries (if you are adding new dependents or have not completed your beneficiary information in the past
  • A thorough understanding of the plans being offered
  1. Begin at purdue.edu, select the “Benefits Open Enrollment for Faculty & Staff” banner at the top of the page. Log in to Benefitfocus with your Purdue career account and BoilerKey.

  2. From the Welcome page, select the gold enrollment button in the upper right corner.

  3. Now, on the “Manage Your Benefits” page, select the gold “Get started >” box.

  4. You’ll see a profile screen with your pertinent demographic and contact information. Please review it carefully. You may update your personal email and mobile phone number in the system. After you’ve reviewed, click “Continue to next step”.

  5. Next, review your dependent information. Select “Add Dependent” to add additional dependents not listed or “Edit” to make changes to existing information. Then click “Next” to move on to the next step.

  6. You’ll now need to answer three survey questions for tobacco, spouse coverage and legal notice certification. If you choose spouse coverage and your spouse qualifies for a waiver, you’ll see instructions for submitting the waiver form at the bottom of the screen. If you choose spouse coverage, follow the instructions in the blue box. Once you’ve completed the survey questions, click save and continue.

  7. On the Open Enrollment Benefits page, you will see a summary of your benefit plan options. You won’t be able to submit your enrollment until you have made a decision on all the benefit plans highlighted in blue. It’s best to follow the numbered benefit plans in order. Beginning with medical coverage, select “Begin enrollment” to review the medical plan options or “Decline coverage” to opt out of medical plan coverage.

  8. Once on the “Choose your Medical Plan.” page, you will have the option to select your medical plan. New plans are being offered in 2021, so be sure to review your options carefully. Confirm you have the correct dependents selected on the left side of the page – if they’re highlighted in green with a checkmark, you are enrolling them in the coverage, too. Select “Next” to move on to the next page.

  9. If you enroll in a medical plan, you’ll be offered a Health Savings Account (HSA). You will be asked a question to make sure you meet eligibility criteria. Please read carefully – if you answer “yes”, you are eligible for an HSA. If you answer no, you will be offered an HRA, or Health Reimbursement Arrangement. Only Purdue can make contributions to your HRA – you may not.

For the HSA, you will be asked if you want one. Make your choice and then select “Continue”.
  1. You have three options for HSA contributions. You can maximize your contributions, putting in the most allowed (minus the contribution from Purdue), you can choose your own amount or you can opt for an employer-only contribution. Make your choice and click “Continue”.

Enter the amount you would like to contribute per paycheck for 2021, then select “Continue”. Review your HSA contributions, then click “Save and Continue”.

  2. Next, you may choose a Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Account, or FSA. Simply click the gold “Select Plan” button and enter your annual contribution. Or choose “Decline Coverage” if you don’t want an FSA.
  3. On the screen, you’ll see a summary of the medical and prescription coverage, as well as the HSA and FSA plans. Review the coverages you have elected and select edit to make any changes. After reviewing all elections, click “Save.”

  4. Next, you will be directed back to the “Open Enrollment Benefits” summary page. Select “Begin Enrollment” under each plan option to make your elections for coverage for that plan. Select your coverage and dependents for each plan.

  5. Continue down the page, selecting your coverages and making decisions for each of the blue highlighted plans. Click the gold “Begin enrollment” button for each benefit. Once you have enrolled in the coverage or you have declined coverage, the blue highlight is removed and you are able to continue.

  6. Further down the summary, you will see the life insurance plans with the coverage you have currently selected that will continue for 2021 unless you choose “Edit coverage” and make a change. If you previously entered your beneficiaries, you will see this information listed. If you have not entered beneficiaries, you are able to do so by selecting the pencil icon next to “Edit”.

  7. Continue down the page reviewing your coverages and making decisions on blue highlighted plans, until you reach the bottom of the page.

  8. Once you’ve made all your elections and reviewed them, click “Complete Enrollment” when you are ready to submit your enrollment.

  9. You’ll then see a pop-up that confirms you’ve completed your enrollment. On this page, you can select “Show all of my benefits” to review your selections. You can also make changes or print a Benefits Summary Report.  To end enrollment, choose “Continue to next page”. You’ve successfully completed enrollment.
