This week, many members from HLA and their friends attended the annual meeting of the American Society of Horticultural Sciences in Orlando, Florida. At the ASHS meeting, Peter Hirst participated in the HORT Legends interview series. Previously Cary Mitchell was also interviewed as a HORT Legend.
ESE/HLA Graduate student Cristian Salinas and HLA Professor Lori Hoagland attended the 4th Plant Microbiome Symposium in Quito, Ecuador. Salinas received a scholarship to help defray the cost of his attendance at the event, and presented a poster titled ‘The role of seed transmitted endophytes in quinoa tolerance to cadmium stress’.
Ashley Adair and northeast Indiana ANR Educators hosted the NE IN Organic Field Day at Northeast Purdue Ag Center. The event attracted 32 participants and featured equipment demonstrations, knowledge-building for beginner organic grain growers, an update on disease management in organic grain, and an introduction to Purdue organic field research funded by OREI.
Sofia Gomez (MS student) and Celina Gomez presented July 27th at the IPPS-ER meeting. Sofia provided an update on her research with vertical indoor propagation.

Kathleen Zapf (MS/Hoagland Lab) received the College of Agriculture Bayer AG and Bayer Crop Science Plant Breeding Travel Award for $500.
