Hort Extension


HLA was well-represented among speakers at the Pinney Purdue Vegetable Field Day afternoon and evening programs on August 9. There were many great learning opportunities, plus a chance to taste sweet corn from local growers. HLA presenters included: Ashley Adair, Jeanine Arana, Wenjing Guan, Petrus Langenhoven, Liz Maynard, and Stephen Meyers.


On August 9, Stephen Meyers hosted a small group of visitors from North Carolina State University- five county Extension educators and one undergraduate student. The morning included a stop at the Purdue Student Farm where Chris Adair provided a farm tour and answered questions.


John Orick, Karen Mitchell, and Pam Fisher set up the Purdue Extension Master Gardener Plant Info to Go Booth at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on July 27. Dr. Krishna Nemali’s Lab, in collaboration with Purdue Extension Marion County, have put together a home hydroponics display at the Indiana State Fair. The display showcases systems that can be used by home growers to produce healthy food and portrays the importance of hydroponic systems, especially for improving community health. Ashley Adair spoke about cover crop variety selection, cover crop considerations for weed, disease, and pest control, and cover crop termination methods at the Byron Seeds Advanced Soil Health Training event on 7/26 to an audience of about 50.
