Welcome to Purdue Nurse
Welcome to the Fall 2019 issue of Purdue Nurse magazine, where we invite you to join us through stories of the innovative work and inspiring people in the Purdue School of Nursing.
At Purdue we empower our faculty and students to pursue bold ideas, and we are committed to continuous innovation. This is woven into the fabric of our interdisciplinary education and faculty culture.
Examples permeate this issue of Purdue Nurse, including stories of using augmented reality to provide a new dimension in simulations, students working with biomedical engineers to create products to combat opioid addiction and more effectively treat Parkinson’s disease; our PhD in Nursing students following a path tailored to their interests and ideas; an alumnus-developed innovative and state-of-the-art patient device to prevent urinary tract infections; and our commitment and ongoing pursuit of addressing diversity, inclusion and equity. To meet this strategic priority we are embedding diversity, inclusion equity and cultural humility throughout our curriculum and School of Nursing culture. We must prepare nurses at all levels to better understand and care for different populations and their unique needs. Being open to and understanding of different perspectives is a key strength needed by nurse scientists, clinicians and leaders to thrive in the rich landscape of nursing; bringing more diverse perspectives to the table will strengthen our profession and improve the access, quality and delivery of care to all individuals, families and communities.
This is an exciting time at Purdue as we wrap up our sesquicentennial celebration and as the College of Health and Human Sciences enters its 10th anniversary year. Please follow us on social media and our anniversary website www.purdue.edu/hhs/10 to find out details of our celebration activities. We hope you will join us.
As we look to the future, several new initiatives are underway. HHS and the College of Pharmacy are working closely together to develop plans for a new shared Nursing and Pharmacy Instructional Building. This building will allow us to serve students well into the 21st century through state-of-the-art simulation facilities and state-of-the-art instructional space — with a focus on exemplar clinical interprofessional education, collaboration and research. We will keep you updated on our plans and progress through Purdue Nurse online and social media. Your help will be critical to the achievement of this goal.
I am proud of the people who are the Purdue School of Nursing and the impactful work they do. What is highlighted in this issue is only the tip of the iceberg of our deeply talented students and faculty and the strength of our school. I invite you to read Purdue Nurse online and to follow us on social media for more news and Purdue School of Nursing connections. Thank you.
Hail Purdue!
