Description

PIIN LIFE SCIENCES-ENGINEERING TRAINEE WORKSHOP SERIES

On November 4th and 18th, the Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience will hold two life sciences-engineering workshops designed to bring together interdisciplinary research teams of graduate students and postdocs focused on tackling significant problems in neuroscience.

The goals of the workshops are to:

•    Identify important neuroscience questions that would best be addressed using a multidisciplinary approach spanning the life sciences and engineering.

•    Create teams of Purdue graduate students and/or postdocs equipped to solve these problems.

Selected teams will receive funding from PIIN to conduct their proposed research. Teams are expected to report their progress and present their research findings at the end of the project period.

BACKGROUND

Research teams spanning multiple disciplines often achieve groundbreaking advances in neuroscience. By bringing together experts in the life sciences and engineering, we have a unique opportunity to build teams that can tackle major problems in neuroscience with the highest level of innovation.

Key areas in neuroscience where significant problems could be identified might include age-related neurodegenerative disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, addiction, autism, traumatic brain injury, and hearing loss.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

The workshops will be organized as follows:

•    Monday, November 4th, 1-3 pm, DLR 131: Existing groups of life science and engineering graduate students and post-docs will give introductory presentations. Participants will then work in groups to identify major problems in neuroscience to solve through a combined life sciences-engineering approach.

Presenters:

Justin Patel- "Fluorescence lifetime microscopy for the imaging of alpha-Synuclein aggregation in the brain"

Min Ku Kim- “Sticker like sensor patch for remote management of oropharyngeal swallowing disorders”

•    Monday, November 18th, 1-3 pm, DLR 131: Teams of life scientists and engineers (including new members providing additional expertise) will summarize the major research questions identified in the first workshop and formulate more advanced/detailed research plans to be considered for internal funding.

Presenters:

Vivek Ganesh- “Development of a fully implanted wireless controlled system for vagal stimulation and recording in a translational model, the pig”

Tran Nguyen- "Rapidly Prototyped Microscale Implantable Biosensors for Measuring Glutamate Excitotoxicity in Spinal Cord Injury"

Following the request for application (RFA) announcement, teams will submit their research proposals by the indicated deadline.

*Networking and refreshments will follow each meeting.
