Half of moms of kids with autism have high depressive symptoms

August 26, 2022

About 50% of all mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) had elevated levels of depressive symptoms over 18 months, while rates were much lower (6% to 13.6%) for mothers with neurotypical children in the same period, researchers report.

Novel blood test helps evaluate severity in pulmonary arterial hypertension, a rare lung disease

August 25, 2022

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have found that a novel blood test can be used to easily evaluate disease severity in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and predict survivability. PAH is a rare, life-threatening condition that causes unexplained high blood pressure in the lungs. In early clinical studies, the researchers showed the test to significantly improve upon conventional tests, some of which use invasive tools.

NIH Investigates Puzzling Public Health Issue: Long COVID

August 25, 2022

Many people recover fully within a few days or weeks after being infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. But others have symptoms that linger for weeks, months, or even years after their initial diagnosis. Some people seem to recover from COVID-19 but then see their symptoms return, or they develop new symptoms within a few months. Even people who had no symptoms when they were infected can develop symptoms later. Either mild or severe COVID-19 can lead to long-lasting symptoms.

Fertility preservation measures do not appear to increase the risk of breast cancer recurrence

August 25, 2022

Women with a breast cancer diagnosis undergoing procedures for fertility preservation are not at increased risk of recurrence of the disease or disease-specific mortality. This has been shown in a study that followed the participants for five years on average. The results could in the future provide safety and new hope to women who want to preserve their fertility after cancer treatment with chemotherapy.

Completing the micronutrient picture for plant-based milk alternatives

August 24, 2022

Plant-based milk alternatives are an attractive option for people with allergies or intolerances, or who prefer a dairy-free diet. However, because some essential minerals are required to be on the Nutrition Facts label only under certain circumstances, consumers might not know if they are meeting their dietary needs. Now, researchers have analyzed plant-based beverages and found variability in mineral content by type and brand.

Researchers identified markers of chemotherapy resistance and outcome in triple negative breast cancer

August 24, 2022

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and clinicians at Washington University in St. Louis have identified biological markers in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) that are associated with resistance to chemotherapy treatment. The study is published in the journal Cancer Discovery and was funded by the National Cancer Institute's Clinical Proteomics Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC).

Researcher looks at molecular changes for clues to disparities in breast cancer outcomes

August 24, 2022

It's a figure that stands out. Black women have a 36% higher breast cancer mortality rate than other races in spite of having a similar incidence to White women. Black women also are both more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age than White women and have double the rate of the aggressive, harder-to-treat triple negative breast cancer.
