Most people know someone who’s had cancer: a family member, a friend, a loved one. Who gets it can sometimes seem random. But there are many things you can do to reduce your risk. Cancer can start almost anywhere in the body. Normally, your cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When a cell is old or becomes damaged, it dies. Then a new cell takes its place. But when cancer develops, this orderly process breaks down. Cancer cells divide without stopping. They can then spread into surrounding tissues or other parts of the body.

NIH study shows hyaluronan is effective in treating chronic lung disease

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health and their collaborators found that inhaling unfragmented hyaluronan improves lung function in patients suffering from severe exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Hyaluronan, a sugar secreted by living tissue that acts as a scaffold for cells, is also used in cosmetics as a skin moisturizer and as a nasal spray to moisturize lung airways. Utilized as a treatment, hyaluronan shortened the amount of time COPD patients in intensive care needed breathing support, decreased their number of days in the hospital, and saved money by reducing their hospital stay.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) invites organizations and companies to participate with USAID to harness the power of science, technology, and innovation to generate and implement novel tools and approaches that accelerate and sustain improved health outcomes in developing countries. The Objective of this Addendum is to bring together a collaboration of partners with diverse, complementary, and relevant capabilities that, when combined, will accelerate the research and development (R&D) of new HIV prevention products that women can choose to protect themselves, and address the continuing and disproportionately high rates of HIV incidence in women, especially adolescent girls and young women in sub-Saharan Africa.

Millions of Americans, and others around the world, remain at high-risk for cancers for which there are proven prevention and early detection strategies. This is particularly true among medically underserved and hard to reach populations, as barriers continue to inhibit the widespread adoption and implementation of these strategies. The goal of this recommendation is to research, develop, test, and adopt evidence-based strategies to significantly reduce cancer risk in all populations. Researchers will identify effective, sustainable cancer prevention and early detection strategies that involve individuals, family members, caregivers, health care providers and systems, and the community at large, and significantly improve the degree to which they are integrated within clinical and community care settings. Ultimately, these projects aim to improve the availability and use of early cancer detection and preventive interventions to reduce cancer risk and mortality, and to address cancer health disparities in these areas.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support innovative research to understand factors uniquely associated with the immigration experience that contribute to health disparities or health advantages among U.S. immigrant populations. This includes but is not limited to risk/protective factors associated with immigration processes from influences that push migration from the sending country, through the experience of immigration, to the experience of resettlement, short and long term residence in the U.S. and the process of acculturation that affect the health of U.S. immigrant populations (particularly migrant workers, recent and 1st generation immigrants). For the purposes of this funding announcement, the term "1st generation" refers to people who were born in their native country and relocated to the U.S. The term "2nd generation" refers to the U.S. born children of 1st generation immigrants.

The purpose of this FOA is to invite applications for a Research Coordinating Center (RCC) to join the Nutrition for Precision Health consortium(https://commonfund.nih.gov/nutritionforprecisionhealth). The overall goals of the RCC are to provide administrative management and general coordination across the Nutrition for Precision Health consortium; facilitate the development and implementation of dietary intervention and assessment studies across the consortium; and manage relevant data. The RCC selected will work collaboratively, as part of the Nutrition for Precision Health consortium, to develop and implement research protocols and manage data sharing workflows. The RCC must also serve as a key partner with the All of Us Research Program, since it is anticipated that all participants enrolled in the Nutrition for Precision Health dietary studies will be participants in the All of Us Research Program, and all Nutrition for Precision Health data will be shared via the All of Us Researcher Workbench. The end products of the Nutrition for Precision Health consortium will be a rich data resource for research use and algorithms to improve the precision of nutrition advice for individuals.
