CHIPS (Child Intervention, Prevention, and Services) is an interdisciplinary training consortium, created to enhance career development for early career scientists pursuing research careers in the areas of intervention, prevention, and the provision of services for children and adolescents. CHIPS is funded through the NIMH Division of Services and Intervention Research (DSIR), which supports two critical areas of research, intervention research to evaluate the effectiveness of preventive and treatment interventions and mental health services research. If you are a child psychiatry resident, postdoctoral fellow, or junior faculty member with a strong interest in mental health research for children and adolescents, you are invited to apply to the CHIPS program. Applicants must have either an M.D. or a Ph.D. in one of the following fields: Psychology, Sociology, Social work, Nursing, or Public Health.

Funding Opportunity: Promoting Research on Interoception and Its Impact on Health and Disease

The purpose of this NOSI is to promote innovative and rigorous research on interoception and its impact on health and disease. This initiative is broadly supported by many participating NIH institutes, centers, and offices (ICOs). For this NOSI, interoception includes the processes by which an organism senses, interprets, integrates, and regulates signals originating from within itself and represents its internal states. This NOSI encourages basic and clinical research projects that 1) combine diverse expertise; 2) develop and use innovative technologies and approaches to delineate interoceptive mechanisms at the molecular, cellular, circuit, functional, and/or behavioral levels; 3) assess pathophysiological processes of interoception in the context of diseases and disorders; 4) determine the impact of interventions and therapies to manipulate interoceptive processes on health and/or disease; and 5) develop and validate predictive biomarkers, computational models, or artificial intelligence models relevant to interoception and its impact on health and disease.

Funding Opportunity: Research on Biopsychosocial Factors of Social Connectedness and Isolation on Health, Wellbeing, Illness, and Recovery (R01 Basic Experimental Studies with Humans Required)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) invites research projects that seek to explain the underlying mechanisms, processes, and trajectories of social relationships and how these factors affect outcomes in human health, illness, recovery, and overall wellbeing. Types of projects submitted under this FOA include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical and/or behavioral outcomes in humans to understand fundamental aspects of phenomena related to social connectedness and isolation. NIH considers such studies as “prospective basic science studies involving human participants” that meet the NIH definition of basic research and fall within the NIH definition of clinical trials (see, e.g., NOT-OD-19-024) Types of studies that should submit under this FOA include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for the purpose of understanding the fundamental aspects of phenomena without specific application towards processes or products in mind. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to seek applications for linked Research Project Sites for the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study using the cooperative agreement award mechanism. This FOA runs in parallel with companion FOAs that seek applications for single, unlinked Research Project Sites (RFA-DA-21-021), a single Consortium Administrative Core (RFA-DA-21-022) and a single Data Coordinating Center (RFA-DA-21-023). It is expected that investigators, upon funding, will work jointly with NIH scientific staff to assist, guide, coordinate, or participate in project activities. This FOA seeks applications to create a consortium of research sites in service of the nationwide, multi-site, multi-modal, longitudinal cohort HBCD Study to prospectively examine brain and behavioral development from birth through childhood, including an emphasis on understanding the impact of in utero substance exposure on outcomes. Research sites will enroll pregnant women and collect data from them and their children using methodologies that include neuroimaging, neurophysiology, behavioral and cognitive assessments and collection of biospecimens.

Study Identifies Risk Factors for Elevated Anxiety in Young Adults During COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented changes to young adults’ lives, resulting in mental health difficulties for many; however, some individuals are particularly prone to heightened anxiety. Little is known about the early life predictors of anxiety during the pandemic. We examined a developmental pathway from behavioral inhibition (BI), a temperament characterized by fearful responses towards novelty, to changes in young adults’ anxiety during the initial period of the pandemic. We hypothesized that a stable pattern of BI across early childhood would predict greater adolescent worry dysregulation, which in turn would predict increases in young adult anxiety during a stressful phase of the pandemic.

As shared previously, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, nearly 20 percent of American adults experience some sort of mental health concern -- such as depression or anxiety – each year. Like the flu, although not as noticeable, mental health concerns can affect physical health. With that in mind, mental health screenings can be done during an annual physical, which some primary care providers do automatically.

Involving Pregnant Individuals in Clinical Research on COVID-19 Vaccines

The continued global escalation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases is of particular concern for pregnant and lactating individuals. While many cases of COVID-19 are asymptomatic or relatively mild, recent evidence suggests that pregnant people are at increased risk of hospitalization and have a 3-fold adjusted relative risk of needing intensive care (10.5 vs 3.9/1000 cases) and mechanical ventilation (2.9 vs 1.1/1000 cases) compared with age-matched nonpregnant individuals. Pregnant people with laboratory-confirmed severe or critical COVID-19 disease have higher adjusted relative risks of cesarean delivery (1.57 [95% CI, 1.30-1.90]), postpartum hemorrhage (2.04 [95% CI, 1.19-3.47]), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (1.64 [95% CI, 1.21-2.23]), and preterm birth (3.53 [95% CI, 2.42-5.15]). These complications are exacerbated in women who are older, have a higher body mass index, and who have medical comorbidities; evidence is emerging that racial and ethnic disparities also are related to morbidity and mortality among pregnant people. With the development of COVID-19 vaccines, there is the potential for prevention of this illness; however, the evidence for the utility, safety, and effectiveness of the available vaccines in pregnancy is unknown.

Funding Opportunity: Natural History of Disorders Screenable in the Newborn Period (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages applications that propose to develop studies that will lead to a broad understanding of the natural history of disorders that already do or could potentially benefit from early identification by newborn screening. A comprehensive understanding of the natural history of a disorder has been identified as a necessary element to facilitate appropriate interventions for infants identified by newborn screening. By defining the sequence and timing of the onset of symptoms and complications of a disorder, a valuable resource will be developed for the field. In addition, for some disorders, specific genotype-phenotype correlations may allow prediction of the clinical course, and for other disorders, identification of modifying genetic, epigenetic, or environmental factors will enhance an understanding of the clinical outcomes for an individual with such a condition. Comprehensive data on natural history will facilitate the field's ability to: 1) accurately diagnose the disorder; 2) understand the genetic and clinical heterogeneity and phenotypic expression of the disorder; 3) identify underlying mechanisms related to basic defects; 4) potentially prevent, manage, and treat symptoms and complications of the disorder; and 5) provide children and their families with needed support and predictive information about the disorder.
