The purpose of this Notice is to announce the intention of NICHD, with NIDCD, NIEHS, NIMH, and NINDS, to issue an FOA to solicit new and renewal applications for autism centers of excellence (ACE) R01 Networks. This FOA will be a reissue of RFA-HD-17-008. A companion FOA will solicit applications for ACE Centers supported by the P50 activity code (see NOT-HD-21-007). An individual may serve as the Principal Investigator for an ACE Center or Network on only one application.

Over the last 2 decades, the suicide rate in the United States has been on a grim, steady march upwards. But a new study highlights an encouraging exception: between 1999 and 2018, the rate of suicide related to cancer decreased. This drop was greatest among people considered to be at higher suicide risk in general, including men and older adults.

A new study funded by the National Institutes of Health will evaluate the effects of remdesivir in pregnant women who have been prescribed the drug to treat COVID-19. The study, which will be conducted at 17 sites in the continental United States and Puerto Rico, aims to determine how pregnant women metabolize the drug and whether there are any potential side effects. “Pregnant women with COVID-19 are at high risk for hospitalization, for intensive care admission and for needing ventilator support,” said Diana W. Bianchi, M.D., director of NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). “There is an urgent need to identify effective treatments for this population and to determine whether drugs prescribed for other adults are appropriate for use in pregnancy.”

The genetic basis of Lewy body dementia (LBD) is not well understood. Here, we performed whole-genome sequencing in large cohorts of LBD cases and neurologically healthy controls to study the genetic architecture of this understudied form of dementia, and to generate a resource for the scientific community. Genome-wide association analysis identified five independent risk loci, whereas genome-wide gene-aggregation tests implicated mutations in the gene GBA. Genetic risk scores demonstrate that LBD shares risk profiles and pathways with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, providing a deeper molecular understanding of the complex genetic architecture of this age-related neurodegenerative condition.

Since the pandemic began, cancer researchers have also been contributing their expertise and resources to scientific investigations of the coronavirus. Their findings have been broad in scope, ranging from insights into how the virus enters cells to the identification of potential therapies. For example, cancer researchers reported recently that antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 may protect people from being reinfected by the virus. The research was part of NCI’s ongoing response to the pandemic, which also includes a study of patients with cancer and COVID-19 and studies of genomic factors that influence the severity of the disease.

Millions of older Americans take aspirin daily to reduce their risk for heart disease and colorectal cancer. But, new data suggests this protective edge for colorectal cancer comes only if they begin taking aspirin before age 70. In a pooled analysis of two large U.S. cohorts of health professionals, researchers confirmed the surprise finding of an earlier clinical trial, known as ASPREE (Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly). That study found regular aspirin use confers no apparent protection against the development of these cancers in an elderly population.
