Researchers in gynecologic oncology have begun testing a promising surgery for premenopausal women at high genetic risk for ovarian cancer that avoids early menopause and may prevent these malignancies from developing. Studies have shown that most ovarian cancers actually begin to grow from cancer cells that developed in the fallopian tubes. This trial is testing if removing the fallopian tubes before menopause prevents ovarian cancer.

A genomic analysis of lung cancer in people with no history of smoking has found that a majority of these tumors arise from the accumulation of mutations caused by natural processes in the body. This study was conducted by an international team led by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and describes for the first time three molecular subtypes of lung cancer in people who have never smoked.

Researchers have developed a deep learning-based method that can predict the possible onset of Alzheimer's disease from brain images with an accuracy of over 99 percent. The method was developed while analyzing functional MRI images obtained from 138 subjects and performed better in terms of accuracy, sensitivity and specificity than previously developed methods.

Imagine if we were able to determine an individual’s cancer risk by characterizing their genetic makeup, family history, environmental exposures, and behavioral factors and then tailor personalized prevention approaches based on these factors. To achieve this, we need a comprehensive biological understanding of the causes of cancer and cancer development to develop new interventions that reduce the risk of cancer. This long-term goal—precision prevention—can end cancer as we know it by preventing suffering and death for those at risk and by helping those not at risk avoid unnecessary tests and treatments.

When the COVID-19 pandemic began and the technologies necessary to combat it came into focus, testing was immediately identified as being top on the list. Mohit Verma, assistant professor of agricultural and biological engineering, had been working for years on developing a diagnostic tool to detect Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) in cattle using nasal swabs. Verma and his colleagues identified nucleic acids specific to different pathogens that cause the disease and developed a paper-based testing device that was cheap to manufacture, accessible and accurate.
