Birgit Kaufmann

Prof. Birgit Kaufmann has received her PhD from Bonn University (Germany) in 1999. She joined Purdue University in 2007 as a tenure track Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in Mathematics and Physics and raised through the ranks to Full Professor in 2018. She became the Associate Head of Graduate Studies in the Department of Mathematics in July of 2023. Her research in Mathematical Physics was supported by a CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation, a Simons Fellowship in Theoretical Physics and other research grants. She received the University Faculty Scholar award in 2017 and has won several teaching prizes, most recently being inducted in the Purdue Book of Great Teachers. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the flute.
 
Research interests: Integrable systems, Quantum spin chains, Bethe Ansatz, Quantum Computing applied to statistical mechanics models.
