Class Absences

The Office of the Dean of Students is able to assist students in instances of Grief, Military, and Jury Duty Absences. To request that a notice of leave be sent, a student should submit the corresponding absence request form below. A Student Support Specialist from the Office of the Dean of Students will be in contact with the student no later than the end of the next business day following the submission of their request. Please note, the absence verification process will not be complete until communication has occurred with a Student Support Specialist and the necessary documentation has been received. The complete absence policy established by the University can be found on the Student Regulations website.

COVID-19: All students, faculty and staff should report any COVID-19 symptoms or exposure to Protect Purdue Health Center (PPHC), including while away from campus. The PPHC is available 24/7 by phone at 765-496-INFO (4636) or toll-free at 833-571-1043 and select the option for PPHC.

Grief Absences: We know that a time of loss is very difficult for a student. The Office of the Dean of Students (ODOS) is here to support the student however we can. Students are eligible for a specific number of days of excused absence following the death of a loved one. The number of days is determined by the relationship of the individual lost. Additional days may be granted to account for travel considerations. A student should complete the Grief Absence Request Form to request that an absence notification be sent to instructors.

Military AbsencesPurdue recognizes that those who are actively serving in the reserves or National Guard of the United States are required by their military contract to attend mandatory training with failure to attend punishable under law. A student should complete the Military Absence Request Form to request that an absence notification be sent to instructors.

Jury Duty AbsencesStudents who are summoned to serve as potential jurors and/or who have been empaneled as jurors in a criminal or civil trial may request an excused absence through the Jury Duty Absence Policy for Students. A student should complete the Jury Duty Absence Request Form to request that an absence notification be sent to instructors.

Parenting Leave: Students who are pregnant, have recently given birth, or need a leave of absence to care for a newborn, adopted, legal guardian, or foster care, may petition for a leave of absence though the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE).

Other Absences: We know sometimes it may be necessary for a student to be absent for personal reasons beyond their control. Absences outside of those covered by the grief, military, and jury duty absence policies are at the discretion of the instructor. Purdue expects each student to be responsible for class-related work missed as a result of an unavoidable absence. Students should contact their instructors directly to discuss the absence and completion of missed coursework. This work may be made up at the discretion of the instructor. Students who feel that they have been wrongly denied an excused absence or the opportunity to make up missed work should contact the head of the department offering the course to attempt to resolve the matter. The absence policy established by the University can be found on the Student Regulations website.
