Discovery Park Undergraduate Research Internship program now accepting fall semester proposals

Discovery Park is currently accepting faculty proposals for its Undergraduate Research Internship program. Through the internship program, Discovery Park will bring together select groups of undergraduate students, graduate mentors and faculty advisors.

The goal of this fall’s program is to identify problems in the key strategic areas of global security and global sustainability. Faculty project proposals should focus on these thematic areas. Interested faculty can submit abstracts for individual projects through the program portal. The deadline for proposal submissions is Aug. 18. Final projects will be selected by Aug. 21.

Students may apply for up to three projects from Aug. 21 to Sept. 4. Faculty project supervisors will review all eligible student applications. Each participating student will earn a $1,000 fall semester fellowship from the DURI program.

Project supervisors will meet with their selected interns to 1) develop a fall schedule with approximately 10 hours per week (minimum 100 hours total) and 2) outline research project expectations. The proposed student research will take place Sept. 18 through Dec. 8. An end-of-semester research symposium will be arranged for the undergraduate researchers and interested mentors.

A series of workshops will be held this fall to help assemble teams for collaboration between three to five undergraduate students and two or more faculty members. Each of these small teams of undergraduate students and mentors will work together on a consistent basis to produce research more impactful than individual students can achieve on their own, as well as to provide a basis for further collaboration among faculty in pursuing ambitious projects with potential to solve major challenges at a global scale.

Faculty should direct any questions about the program to Peter Bermel, program manager, at pbermel@purdue.edu.
