Honored international, U.S. films to show on campus

A world of award-winning, Oscar-nominated and critically acclaimed movies will parade across the screen at Purdue during two months in Global Film Fest 2017, presented by Asha for Education’s Purdue chapter.

The 10+ film showings, all free and open to the public, will include movies and documentaries with special focus on the issues related to gender, race, education and diversity. Films in languages other than English will have English subtitles.

All events in the festival will be in Stewart Center’s Fowler Hall. Since all will occur outside hours of enforcement for regular (A, B, C) parking permits, most spaces in the nearby Wood Street Parking Garage will be available.

Upcoming films are:

* Feb. 23: Nominees for 2017 Oscars in Short Film (Live Action) category:. “Sing" ("Mindenki") from Hungary, 25 min.; “Ennemis intérieurs" ("Enemies Within") from France, 27 min.; “Silent Nights" from Denmark, 30 min. 6-7:30 p.m. Each is in the language of its country of origin.

* Feb. 23: “Buen Día, Ramón,” Ariel Awards, Mexico 2015 (six nominations). 7:30 p.m. Accompanied with introduction and discussion led by Rosanne Altstatt, contemporary art historian and assistant dean for national and international scholarships, Honors College; Ricardo Quintana and Christina Weiler, PhD students in comparative literature. Film in German and Spanish.

* Feb. 26: “The Birth of a Nation,” “Queen of Katwe,” “Loving” (2017 Oscar nominee). Noon, 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tentative panel after third film.

* Feb. 27: “Moonlight,” Golden Globe 2016 winner, 2017 Oscar nominee. 6 p.m. Followed by panel: Lowell Kane, director of Purdue LGBTQ Center; Charles Hawthorne, president, Purdue Queer Students of Color; Sharonda Woodford, graduate student, Department of Political Science; Juanita Crider, Black Cultural Center program advisor, American studies doctoral student (moderator).

* March 3: “Jackie,” 2017 Oscar nominee. 6 p.m.

* March 8: “Sonita,” Sundance Film Festival 2016 winner. 6 p.m. Followed by panel coordinated by Xavier Hernandez, director, Asian American and Asian Resource and Cultural Center. Film in English, Persian, Dari.

* March 21: “Hidden Figures,” Golden Globe 2016 winner and 2017 Oscar nominee. 6 p.m. Followed by panel coordinated by: Zenephia Evans, director, Science Diversity Office.

The Feb. 26 schedule has multiple sessions with lunch and tea breaks. Due to the award season and possible rescheduling of film releases, screenings of one or two movies on later dates might change. Asha for Education’s Facebook page will have updates.

Expected films on other dates are “La La Land,” “Lion,” “Dangal" (India).
