Speakers, topics set for VACCINE conference

VACCINE, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence based at Purdue, will host a free Visual Analytics and Data Driven Decision Making Conference on Nov. 2 at the Hall for Discovery and Learning Research, Room 131.

Purdue faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the conference. Registration and breakfast begin at 7:45 a.m., and the conference runs through 4:45 p.m. Attendees are asked to RSVP by Wednesday (Oct. 26).

The keynote speakers are John Dargan, director of operations and requirements analysis in the DHS Science and Technology Directorate, and Sue Lane, formerly of the DHS Senior Executive Service and assistant director for DHS Joint Task Force East. Dargan will speak on "Data Driven Policy Analysis," and Lane will focus on "A Holistic Approach to Big Data."

Additional conference speakers are David Ebert, director of VACCINE and the Silicon Valley Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Tomas Diaz de la Rubia, chief scientist and executive director of Discovery Park.

Several panel discussions also will be held during the conference. Topics and panelists are:

* Digital forensics panel with:
-- Edward Delp, the Charles William Harrison Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue.
-- Charles Russo, professor of criminal justice, American Public University.
-- Michael Young, former Transportation Security Administration and Secret Service executive (ret.).
-- Lt. Rudy Zupanc, watch commander, Ohio State Highway Patrol Hub.

* Visualization and data driven policy analysis with:
-- John Dargan, director of operations and requirements analysis, DHS Science and Technology Directorate
-- Arch Turner, operations analysis chief, Operations and Requirements Analysis, DHS Science and Technology Directorate.
-- Rob Parker, vice admiral of the U.S. Coast Guard (ret.) and former commander, Coast Guard Atlantic Area. 
-- Sue Lane, formerly of DHS Senior Executive Service and assistant director for DHS Joint Task Force East (ret.) 

* New product transition with:
-- Michael Shepard, entrepreneur-in-residence, Purdue Foundry.
-- Melissa Berquist, associate director, Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases, Texas A&M.
-- William Wright, senior partner, Uncharted Software, Inc.
-- Greg Deason, senior vice president, Purdue Research Foundation,and director of innovation and entrepreneurship, Purdue Foundry.

* Criminal investigations and emerging sources of information with:
-- Abish Malik, VACCINE research scientist.
-- Yung-Hsiang Lu, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, Purdue. 
-- Brandon Behlendorf, associate professor at University at Albany-SUNY and formerly assistant director of the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START).
-- Gary Durham, CEO of Durham and Associates and former Secret Service special agent in charge (ret.).
