W.I.N.G.S

Thursday, October 24th, 2024

Lesson Overview:  Students must design blades that mitigate the harmful effects on wildlife. Lesson Scenario:  You are working for a renewable energy company – W.I.N.G.S. and your job is to help the company design new blades for wind turbines. W.I.N.G.S. researchers have determined that wind turbine blades must be redesigned to reduce the harm to […]

Planting Roots

Thursday, October 24th, 2024

Lesson Overview:  Students will design and print a model root structure based off of native plants in your area to help slow down the erosion caused by the fire. Lesson Scenario:  A wildfire has just destroyed Cimarron Canyon, Hermit’s Peak, Calf Canyon, and Sugarite Canyon  and the monsoon rains are starting up. Due to the […]

Wing it

Lesson Overview:  Students integrate observations of biological processes and organisms into the design of a wind turbine blade to optimize its energy production. Lesson Scenario:  You and your team are new engineers at CS Wind, the wind turbine manufacturing company. They are looking to design new blades for the next generation of wind turbines. The […]

Animal Architects

Thursday, June 6th, 2019

This unit takes biological phenomena such as transpiration of plants, laws of thermodynamics, animal behavior and regulation of body temperature, to create innovative, eco-friendly housing and landscape designs. This unit specifically focuses on the need for sustainable development by implementing biomimicry into landscape/housing designs. Students are tasked to use their knowledge of the aforementioned topics to create a blueprint of a new, ‘better’ house.

Bug RVs: Build a Better Bug Box

Tuesday, June 4th, 2019

Biology students study insects and design a box for collecting insects. This design is done in collaboration with engineering students who 3D print the final product. These bug boxes are later used by elementary students to collect insects in the school’s nature area.

Animal Armor

Tuesday, June 4th, 2019

Students study different types of arthropods and design 3D printed body armor for stuffed animals based on exoskeletons.  Students will present the 3D product with a tri-fold at the student art show.
