Feb. 15, 2023

Veterans Success Center (VSC) Director Morgan Torres recently was invited to serve on the Indiana Veterans Affairs Commission.

The Commission consists of seven members appointed by the Governor. Members of the commission must be honorably discharged veterans who have at least six months of service in the armed forces of the United States and are citizens of the United States and Indiana.

In the role, Torres will help facilitate connection points between the commission and students who receive military benefits.

“There are several state benefits that go through the colleges, and it’s beneficial to have an education representative on the commission when it comes to applying state benefits to service members pursuing higher education, as well as their dependents or their spouses,” Torres said.

The commission also may adopt rules necessary to obtain benefits under present and future enactments of the Congress of the United States concerning veterans' affairs and enter into on behalf of the state contracts or agreements with the government of the United States to receive benefits under present and future federal enactments concerning veterans' aid and benefits.

At least one regular meeting of the Commissioners is held per quarter, and that meeting is open to the public. Meetings are generally held on the second Friday of January, April, July, and October.

The Commission manages and develops the Military Family Relief Fund and the Veterans' Affairs Trust Fund and the assets of the funds. It also aims to create a self-sustaining fund that is not dependent on legislative sources of funding.
