Global Food & Nutrition Security Seminar - Dr. Darrell Schulze
Description
Putting Soil Maps Back to Work in Western Kenya
Dr. Darrell Schulze
Thursday, November 17, 2016
12:00 – 1:15 PM, Deans Auditorium (PFEN 241)
Soils are the foundation for almost all agriculture. We have very detailed maps of our soil resources in the U.S., and producers and others use these maps regularly to make soil use and management decisions. The situation, however, is very different throughout much of Africa where either no soil maps exist, or where existing soil maps remain unused. Dr. Schulze will describe his work in western Kenya where, quite fortunately, considerable soils information is available. We are proceeding along two lines of investigation. First, how can we make existing soil maps and the information they contain readily available on mobile devices via the cell phone network, and second, how can we make existing soil maps better using digital soil mapping techniques.
The seminar is open to the public. This is part of a weekly seminar on Food Security, where invited speakers from Purdue and outside the university help elevate the dialogue on the availability, access, and use of food in our world. Please do come and engage in dialogue with students and our expert speakers.
