Global Food & Nutrition Security Seminar - Dr. Phil Abbott
Description
Global Food Trade: Food Crisis Price Shocks and Developing Country Impacts
Dr. Phil Abbott
Thursday, September 29, 2016
12:00 – 1:15 PM, Deans Auditorium (PFEN 241)
International trade can be an engine for economic growth, a source of supplies to ensure food security, and a source of stability (or instability) to agricultural markets. The 2007-08 food crisis challenged policy regimes in many developing countries as policymakers sought to simultaneously achieve food security and farm income objectives as world prices for agricultural commodities spiked. In this seminar, Dr. Abbott will examine economic research on how countries responded to those world price spikes, and afterwards, drawing lessons relevant to both food policy and agricultural development.
The seminar is open to the public. This is part of a weekly seminar on Food Security, where invited speakers from Purdue and outside the university help elevate the dialogue on the availability, access, and use of food in our world. Please do come and engage in dialogue with students and our expert speakers.
