The Future of Water

Water is a most important resource for human civilization, serving human society in so many ways, including its indispensable use in sustainable production of food for a growing world population. Food production consumes most of the world’s available fresh water, and as a result, global communities are increasingly threatened by water stress. The growing pressure on our global water resource comes from socioeconomic growth, increased demand and expansion of agriculture, as well as from climate change effects. As agriculture’s demand for water are projected to increase, potential solutions will have to include new technologies for efficient use of fresh water (drought resistant crops, better crop management practices, as well as wasting water less, polluting less, and reusing more). 

Dr. Turco will address these and many other essential uses of water for sustaining human civilization. He may also point to the science, policy, and civic attention needed to ensure the sustainable use of water globally.

The seminar is open to the public. This is the first of a weekly seminar on Food Security, where invited speakers from Purdue and outside the university will help elevate the dialogue on the availability, access, and use of food in our world.
